Ghana has taken a big step toward improving outcomes for children diagnosed with cancer with the validation of the Draft Childhood Cancer Treatment Guidelines, a national framework designed to standardize diagnosis, referral, treatment, and supportive care across the health system.

The stakeholder validation meeting, held at the Ministry of Health on 8 January 2026, brought together  policymakers,  clinicians, development partners, and civil society organisations to align the guidelines.   While Ghana has seen improved diagnosis of childhood cancers like leukaemia and retinoblastoma, reflecting growing awareness and diagnostic capacity, geographic access and workforce gaps remain key challenges.

The guidelines are important because it will help make sure that every child, no matter where they are in Ghana, once they go to a treatment centre, they will be able to access standardised care and treatment.

As an organisation working closely with children, families, clinicians, and policymakers, LCCG remains committed to supporting implementation through advocacy, capacity building, and partnerships, ensuring that every child with cancer in Ghana has access to the best healthcare possible.
