This past September, we joined the global community to commemorate International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month under the theme, “Joining Hands to Fight Cancer.” The event, held at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and extended across 16 hospitals, was a resounding success, uniting dignitaries, medical professionals, supporters, and families in the ongoing fight against childhood cancer.

The atmosphere was filled with both hope and determination as we gathered to raise awareness and renew our commitment to supporting children battling cancer.

Our esteemed guests, including Lady Joy Otabil of the International Central Gospel Church, a UNICEF representative, the President of the Paediatric Society of Ghana, Madam Hilda Boye, World Child Cancer Country Coordinator Mrs. Pinnamang Desu, and Professor Lorna Awo Renner, Head of Paediatrics Oncology at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, underscored the significance of our mission. The event also welcomed medical professionals and representatives from several NGOs working in the childhood cancer space. Their presence reflected the importance of a unified, collective effort to tackle childhood cancer and support affected families.

One of the most moving moments of the event was the heartfelt speech by Sarah, a mother whose daughter, Stacy, is currently undergoing treatment for Burkitt’s Lymphoma. Sarah shared her deeply personal journey—the fears, struggles, and small victories her family has experienced. Her words resonated deeply with everyone present, reminding us all of the immense courage and resilience of children and families affected by cancer. Her testimony was a powerful reminder of why our collective efforts—whether through financial support, medical care, or emotional encouragement—are crucial to helping these young warriors.

Throughout the day, Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana showcased a range of programs and initiatives designed to support children with cancer and their families. We highlighted skill development workshops for mothers, where they learn to create beautiful beaded crafts, and our psychosocial support for children through art therapy, where the children’s paintings serve as an outlet for their emotions. These initiatives represent our ongoing commitment to providing holistic care that empowers families to navigate the often overwhelming challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

A particularly inspiring moment came when a group of brave young cancer survivors performed a choreographed dance to the iconic song “We Are the World” by Michael Jackson. This performance captured the essence of our theme—by joining hands and standing together as one, we can achieve more. It was a reminder that unity and shared determination can bring hope and healing to countless children and their families.

The event concluded with a special presentation: one of our young heroes gifted a beautiful painting to Lady Joy Otabil in recognition of her unwavering financial support over the years. Her generous contributions have enabled the treatment, care, and support of many patient families, and this small token was a symbol of the gratitude felt by all.

We are immensely grateful for the continued support of our partners, donors, and the entire community. Your generosity and compassion make it possible for us to carry out our mission and have a lasting impact on the lives of children and families affected by childhood cancer. As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the fight against childhood cancer and look forward to working together to bring hope and healing to even more families in need.

Together, with hands joined, we can achieve more.
