On December 25, 2024, the Pediatric Oncology Department experienced a critical shortage of blood and blood products, compromising the care of children undergoing chemotherapy. This shortage threatened to delay essential treatments and required urgent intervention.
The situation became even more dire as parents were left to source blood and blood products on their own, placing a heavy financial burden on families already facing the emotional and economic strain of childhood cancer. As a response, we quickly launched an emergency outreach to mobilize potential donors and partner organizations on the 6th of January, 2025. Just like the previous years, the University of Ghana Medical Students’ Association (UGMSA) responded and we successfully raised 90 pints of blood.

Mothers of children with cancer who had benefited from the just ended Bakery Skill development program also contributed to the event by making freshly baked goods to support the blood donors. Our nurses and doctors also volunteered to make it successful. This is the beauty of the community within pediatric oncology.
Through the generosity of our valuable blood donors, Our children will smile again.
