September 2025: Launching Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Under the able leadership of the office of the Non Communicable Diseases,An agency of the Ghana Health Service and other Partners,  this year’s childhood cancer awareness month was proudly launched at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital on the 5th of September, 2025. Partners present were Lifeline For Childhood Cancer Ghana, Cure Childhood Cancer Ghana, World Child Cancer showed their commitment in working together to advance , advocate for the timely and effective treatment support for children battling cancer and their families.  The theme ,Gold September was a beautiful display of community solidarity and partnerships, showing what is possible when many voices unite for one cause.

The gathering also brought together key stakeholders in the childhood cancer space Ghana Health Service, World Health Organisation, the Paediatric Society of Ghana, survivors, schools, and traditional leaders all standing side by side to raise awareness and give children with cancer a chance at life.

Akua Sarpong, executive director for Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana(LCCG) addressed the audience, highlighting LCCG’s mission and unwavering commitment to children and families battling cancer. She reminded all present that the fight against childhood cancer demands intensive awareness, strong collaboration, and continuous support. She reaffirmed the organisation’s support  to stand with every child and family on this journey. Dr. Nihad Salifu, Head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit at the  Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH), also presented an insightful overview of childhood cancer in Ghana, using the moment to educate the public on the vital signs and symptoms every community member should know. Traditional leaders also raised  their voices  to support  and called for increased awareness in the communities and pledged to actively champion future initiatives.

The launch served as a reminder that defeating childhood cancer is not a sole responsibility of an individual but rather a collective responsibility.  .
